Woodland

The woodlands at Bucktoe Creek Preserve vary in composition from dense even-aged stands of early-successional species a couple of decades old, to diverse groves of slow-growing trees in their second century of growth. These woodlands have changed greatly since Europeans first settled the area over 300 years ago. Many trees were felled and used for building material and fuel, and the resultant open land was used for pasture and agriculture. In many cases, the woodlands were cut over several times. The goal at Bucktoe is to restore degraded areas of woodland and to reestablish and connect existing woodland with new plantings.
